Wine and Romance Have you ever wanted to experience the terroir that produces the world's finest wines? Sail with us to Bordeaux, where we dock near the heart of the stately city that gives the region its name. Take a city tour to see the beautiful neoclassical architecture, the best streets for shopping and dining, and well-tended public gardens. Of course the biggest reason to celebrate Bordeaux is the wine. Join us for tours and tastings to famous chateaux and appellations with names like Pauillac, Sauternes, Margaux and Saint-Emilion. Two overnights provide the time you want to learn, sip and buy-twice. Other destinations include the ancient walled city of St. Malo, where the sea and sky change dramatically as tides race in and out. There's a lot to explore here, including the jewel of Mont-Saint-Michel, a legendary Benedictine Abbey in an astonishingly scenic setting. Our maiden call in Lorient will delight sailors with views of beautiful yachts bobbing on the harbor and an excellent sailing museum. This town was a German submarine base during the war, and later the French Navy extended the base for nuclear submarines. So you can now visit both a real French submarine and learn German war history in the same place. Who knew? If subs and yachts aren't your thing, take the ferry to the pretty isle of Ile de Groix just off the coast. Rent a bike or stroll the coastal path for fabulous views. From Bilbao, don't miss the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry, a masterpiece inside and out, even before you look at the art. After your tour, dine on hearty Basque-style tapas and Spain's famous Rioja wines at one of many excellent restaurants in town. Our final stop before Lisbon is Gijon in the Asturian region of Spain. Today it's a major port, but you'll see vestiges of the ancient fishing village it once was in narrow cobblestone streets and the old town on the Cimadevilla headlands. Beaches are a main feature of this town and you can take a stroll on La Playa de Poniente on the harbor or the long promenade at La Playa de San Lorenzo on the other side of the city. Don't miss the regional tapas and wines or a taste of Asturia's fabulous pastries and cakes made of almonds, hazelnuts, chocolate, and light custards. There are many accomplished bakers here, and it shows.
